Inter Miami CF attacker Edison Azcona and Inter Miami CF II and Academy defender Israel Boatwright have been called up by the Dominican Republic’s U-20 national team for the upcoming 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship. The tournament will allow Azcona and Boatwright the opportunity to help the Dominican Republic compete to qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, as well as for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The Concacaf U-20 Championship will be hosted in Honduras, running from June 18 to July 3, and consist of a group stage followed by knockout rounds; the top three teams in each group will qualify for the knockout stages. The Dominican Republic will start its participation in the Round of 16 of the competition after qualifying directly to the knockout stages of the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship through a preliminary knockout round that took place in November 2021.
The team is set to play on Sunday, June 26, at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa, Honduras against an opponent that is yet to be determined.
Azcona and Boatwright are part of a list of many current and former Inter Miami CF Academy players to be called up to a national team. The list includes: Noah Allen (U.S. U-20 MYNT), Edison Azcona (Dominican Republic senior and youth national teams), Israel Boatwright (Dominican Republic U-20 national team), Benjamin Cremaschi (U.S. U-19 MYNT), Tyler Austin, Justin Ellis, Santiago Morales and Felipe Valencia (U.S. U-15 MYNT), Logan Batiste and Tyler Hall (U.S. U-17 MYNT), Khobi Thomas (Jamaica U-20 national team), among others.
