Inter Miami CF Acquires Veteran Midfielder Federico Higuaín

Club trades $50,000 in General Allocation Money to D.C. United in 2021

Inter Miami CF announced today it has acquired veteran attacking midfielder Federico HiguaĆ­n in a trade with D.C. United. In exchange, Inter Miami will send $50,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money.

HiguaĆ­n has registered 60 goals and 68 assists in 217 appearances in Major League Soccer since joining the league in 2012, adding a plethora of experience and attacking depth during the final stretch of the regular season for Inter Miami.


The Argentine became one of the MLSā€™s best midfielders as he featured for the Columbus Crew SC for eight seasons after joining in July 2012. HiguaĆ­n was named the MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2012, led the Crew SC to the MLS Cup Final in 2015, and became only the 19th player in MLS history to register at least 50 goals and 50 assists in MLS. Overall, HiguaĆ­n registered 55 goals and 63 assists in 193 regular season appearances with Columbus, in addition to four goals and five assists in 14 playoff matches. 


The 35-year-old attacking midfielder joined D.C. United ahead of the 2020 season as a player and Player Development Coach, where he made 10 appearances, scoring two goals.


Before arriving in MLS, HiguaĆ­n played several seasons in his native Argentina. The midfielder played for Club AtlĆ©tico ColĆ³n for two seasons (2010-2012), Godoy Cruz for one season (2009-2010), Club AtlĆ©tico Independiente for one season (2008-2009), Nueva Chicago for two seasons (2005-2007) and Club AtlĆ©tico River Plate for four seasons (2003-2007). He came through the prestigious River Plate academy before signing his first professional contract with the club in 2003.


HiguaĆ­n also made stops in Mexico and Turkey, playing for Turkish giants Beşiktaş JK for one season (2007-2008) and Mexican powerhouse Club AmĆ©rica for half a season in 2008. With Beşiktaş, he recorded two goals and two assists in 16 appearances. With Club AmĆ©rica, he registered two goals and one assist in 22 appearances.


HiguaĆ­n joined his younger brother Gonzalo HiguaĆ­n on the Inter Miami roster, becoming only the 18th pair brothers to play together in MLS.
