Inter Miami CF announced today that it has signed Ecuadorian international forward Leonardo Campana from the English Premier League’s Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on loan. The 21-year-old forward will bolster the team’s attack through the 2022 season, and the club will hold a purchase option.
Campana, who holds American citizenship and will not occupy an international roster slot, joins the club pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“We’re excited to acquire a player of Leonardo’s pedigree. He’s a hungry young forward with a lot of promise, and we’re confident we’ll be able to develop him and help him reach his full potential with us. He’ll add to our attack and give us a great option up front that we believe can score goals in this league,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.
Campana has been a standout for the Ecuadorian youth and senior national teams. The striker has helped the Ecuador senior side climb to third in the standings in the highly contested CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup Qualifiers as well as featured prominently in the 2021 Copa América. Prior to that, Campana led the U-20 national team to the CONMEBOL 2019 South American U-20 Championship title as the top scorer in the tournament with six goals in nine games. At the club level, Campana earned a move to English Premier League side Wolves at just 19 years old and has since featured on loan in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and the Swiss Super League over the past two years. His experience also includes starring for Ecuador’s winningest team, Barcelona SC.
After joining Wolves in January 2020, the forward made nine league appearances and registered two goals and one assist on loan with F.C. Famalicão in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. In July 2021, Campana joined Grasshopper Club Zürich in the Swiss Super League, where he scored three goals in 14 league appearances.
The Guayaquil, Ecuador native made his senior debut for Barcelona SC in early 2019, going on to feature in 21 total matches that season, tallying four goals and three assists.
In addition to his standout CONMEBOL 2019 South American U-20 Championship campaign, the forward started in every match of Ecuador’s run at the FIFA 2019 U-20 World Cup en route to a third-place finish.
Campana made his senior international debut in a friendly against the United States in March 2019. He has gone on to make 10 senior appearances for the team thus far, appearing in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and the 2021 Copa América, where he featured in four of the team’s five games.
