Inter Miami CF Signs Finnish International Attacker Robert Taylor

Inter Miami CF announced today it has signed Finnish international attacker Robert Taylor from Norwegian top-flight team Sportsklubben Brann to a contract through the 2023 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with a club option for 2024. The 27-year-old winger, who can also be deployed as a central midfielder, reinforces Inter Miami’s roster ahead of the club’s third season in MLS.

Taylor, who will occupy an international roster slot, joins the club pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.

“Robert is a skillful, exciting, chance creator that gives us options in attack as he can excel in different roles as a winger and as a central midfielder. He also adds valuable international experience to the squad as he has featured regularly for the Finnish national team. We are confident his addition will add to our attack and help us succeed,” said Inter Miami CF Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.

The Kuopio, Finland native has spent the entirety of his career in Europe, turning out for Finnish sides JJK Jyväskylä (2013-2015) and Rovaniemen Palloseura (2016-2017), English clubs Lincoln City Football Club (2011-2013) and Boston Town Football Club (loan in 2013), Swedish team AIK Fotboll (2017-2018), and most recently playing for Tromsø Idrettslag (2018 on loan and 2019) and Sportsklubben Brann (2020-2021) in the Norwegian first division. Overall, Taylor has racked up 239 senior appearances at club level across all competitions to date, including four in UEFA Europa League Qualifying fixtures, recording 55 goals and 31 assists.

The attacker has also featured consistently for the Finnish national team, representing his country at the U-17, U-19, U-20 and U-21 categories before making his debut for the senior team in Jan. 2017. He has played 24 times for his country to date, including competing in UEFA World Cup qualifying, UEFA European Championship qualifying, and UEFA Nations League matches, scoring one goal and tallying two assists. Taylor was also a member of Finland’s historic UEFA European Championship 2020 squad last year, as the team qualified for the continental competition for the first time.

Taylor began his career developing as a player in the youth ranks of Finnish team JJK Jyväskylä, first joining the club in 2004. He then joined Lincoln City in England on a two-year scholarship in 2011, before returning to his native Finland and becoming a member of JJK’s first team in 2013.

He made 56 appearances across all competitions for JJK over the following three seasons, contributing with 11 goals, before joining fellow Finnish club Rovaniemen Palloseura (RoPS) in 2016 to make the jump to the country’s first division. Between 2016 and 2017, the versatile attacker clocked in 56 appearances across all competitions for the team, including four in UEFA Europa League Qualifying matches, registering 19 goals and nine assists in the process.

In the summer of 2017, Taylor transferred to Swedish top-flight team AIK Fotboll. He recorded six appearances in his sole season in Sweden before initially joining Norwegian first division club Tromsø Idrettslag on loan in March of 2018, with the deal subsequently turning into a permanent one in August of that year. In all, he appeared in 61 fixtures across all competitions for Tromsø, scoring eight goals and dishing out six assists, before joining fellow Norwegian top-flight club Sportsklubben Brann in 2020. He was a regular in the team’s lineups, playing 60 matches between 2020 and 2021, recording 14 goals and 16 assists in the process.

Taylor is the son of former Finnish fútbol player Paul, who played as a midfielder for Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) in the Finnish top-flight in the 1990s.
