Inter Miami CF announced today that it has signed forward Leonardo Campana to a contract extension through the 2027 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with an option for 2028.
“Leo is a natural goalscorer, and he has proven himself with Inter Miami. We’re pleased to keep a player of his caliber with us,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “Since his arrival in 2022, he has shown to be one of the brightest talents in the league, and has continued to put in top performances this season. We’re confident that he will continue to develop and strengthen our squad as we aim to achieve our goals together this season and beyond.”
“I’m really happy to renew my contract for four more years with the team that has made me feel at home since my first day. I’m happy, motivated and excited for everything to come at this Club, and for a great city like Miami,” said Campana.
Earlier this year, Inter Miami exercised its option to complete the permanent transfer of Campana from English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, following the striker’s loan during the 2022 season.
Since then, the 23-year-old Ecuadorian international has had a standout year, notching three multi-goal games in 2023, and earning three MLS Team of the Matchday honors and two MLS Player of the Matchday awards; Campana is one of just four MLS players with multiple Player of the Matchday recognitions this season. This season, he has made 30 total appearances, 15 of them starts, in all competitions and sits second for the most goals on the team this season with nine.
Campana first joined the Club on loan from the English side Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in Jan. 2022. From the start, Campana was an attacking threat in the frontline, becoming the Club’s second-leading scorer in 2022 with 12 goals in 28 games (in all competitions) while dishing out two assists. In that year, the striker went on to earn MLS Team of Week honors twice, including an unbelievable scoring performance in Week 6 against the New England Revolution, where Campana made history and scored the Club’s first ever hat-trick. Notably, he was also voted MLS Player of the Week for that week as well. Nearing the postseason, Campana was a key force in Inter Miami’s playoff push, scoring three goals in the month of September and helping the team clinch its second-ever playoff berth after defeating Orlando City SC 4-1 at home.
