When Inter Miami CF came to be, one of the pillars for the organization was its player development pathway, where South Florida’s most talented youth players can make the journey from the Academy teams to Inter Miami CF II and finally the First Team. Fast forward to 2022 and it's been a resounding success through its early stages, with the Academy team’s producing top youth players and collecting silverware, and players completing the whole journey and going on to represent the First Team.
Today, Inter Miami CSO and Sporting Director Chris Henderson, head coach Phil Neville, defender DeAndre Yedlin, 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship winner and club Homegrown Noah Allen, and U-15 MLS NEXT Cup winner and MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs MVP Santiago Morales addressed media in a press conference to discuss the club’s development pathway.
“The club provides top-class facilities, the best coaches; it provides a lot and I wouldn’t be the player I am without everything they provide. It’s really prepared me for coming up with the First Team and second team, and even with the U.S. national team\],” explained Allen, who recently [clinched the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship title with the USMYNT and helped the team qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia and the Summer Olympics in 2024.
“All the staff and all the teammates really make you feel like you’re part of a family, like you’re home, and it's great for player development,” added Morales, who helped the Academy U-15 team clinch the title and also earned MVP honors in the U-15 MLS NEXT Cup championship.
Henderson went on to detail the success the work put into the player development pathway has yielded in 2022.
“Our U-15 team won the MLS NEXT Cup and are national champions. Our U-17 team was a GA Cup semifinalist. So that’s two of our youth teams having success this year. To have such a young academy group here in South Florida, we’re really proud of that group.”
Neville then dove into how the success of the player development pathway is product of hardwork and collaboration in search of a common goal.
“It’s a big part of what we’re trying to do at this fútbol club. At the start of the franchise, I think the academy was up there with the most important things that we wanted to do. Three years in and we’re starting to win national tournaments, qualifying in semi-finals and getting players into the national teams,” he detailed.
“There’s a real pathway right from the bottom to the very top and there’s great collaboration between every coach of the Academy to the First Team and there seems to be a real excitement now and we genuinely think in the next four, five seasons we can have more South Florida kids on the roster. I think that is the aim, definitely. Speaking to David [Beckham] a lot, he wants to produce his own, homegrown players. Noah’s come through this year, we’ll have more coming through next year, and the pathway is really clear; if you’re good enough you’ll get through into that First Team. And it’s a big philosophy of this fútbol club, and we’re super proud.
Lastly, Inter Miami right back and USMNT player Yedlin, who was a Homegrown player when he entered the league in 2013, highlighted the positive work that has been done nationwide over the past years to ensure that the best youth talents are being garnered into top-class fútbol players and the top-level environment players at Inter Miami youth teams are surrounded by.
“Being one of the first Homegrown players in the league and now being around these two players [Noah Allen and Santiago Morales] that have a lot more than what I had available at their age, that just shows the progression about what’s going on with youth players in this country. That’s what we need to compete with the best in the world. Credit to these guys for putting in the work, learning and absorbing. It’s great that they can be in a professional environment everyday.
