Closing Out the 2021 Campaign

Inter Miami will visit the New England Revolution for the first time on Sunday for its final 2021 regular season game after falling 1-3 against New York City FC at DRV PNK Stadium in its last match.

Sunday’s fixture will be the second and final matchup of the season against the Revolution, with the team seeking its first win against the Massachusetts-based this campaign after falling 0-5 at home on July 21.

Familiar Faces

Notably, Inter Miami head coach Phil Neville previously encountered New England’s head coach Bruce Arena in an international friendly with England, playing as right-back and defeating the United States 2-1 on May 27, 2005. At the time, Arena was the head coach of the U.S. National.

The match may also feature a series of reunions between former teammates or known rivals for Inter Miami and New England players. Midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro may encounter Gustavo Bou after facing him in Liga MX matches with C.D. Guadalajara in 2017 and with C.F. Monterrey in 2019. Pizarro may also encounter Tajon Buchanan again after featuring against him recently in the semi-finals of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, when Mexico defeated Buchanan’s Canada 2-1 to move onto the final. Federico Higuaín may face Thomas McNamara, who he previously played against in five MLS matches during his stints with Columbus Crew and D.C. United between 2015 to 2020. Higuaín may also face Teal Bunbury, who he has faced several times in the past during his MLS career. Leandro González Pírez, meanwhile, may face McNamara once again after he played against him during his tenure with Atlanta United FC.

Additionally, reunions may be in the cards for several Argentine players. Defender LGP may encounter Bou after the pair played together for Club Atlético River Plate in 2012 and against each other in the following years in the Argentine top-flight. Nicolás Figal may also face Bou after playing against him in Argentine first division fixtures when he was a Club Atlético Independiente player between 2014 and 2016.

Lastly, A.J. de la Garza may face a host of former teammates after he was part of Inter Miami’s inaugural squad in 2020.

New England Revolution's Record in 2021

New England Revolution enters the fixture after not playing over the weekend and winning 1-0 at home against the Colorado Rapids in the team’s last match on Wednesday, Oct. 27. In 2021, New England has recorded 22 wins, seven draws and four losses, totalling 73 points, an MLS record, and winning the 2021 Supporters' Shield.

Forward Adam Buksa, who has registered 16 goals and three assists, has led the side this campaign.
