Positive Momentum on the Road
Inter Miami CF will return to MLS regular season action by visiting Atlanta United FC on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Club will be looking to bounce back after falling 0-4 against the New York Red Bulls and 1-5 to Nashville SC in its last matches.
Inter Miami has only lost once in its past five road matches, recording two wins and two draws and remaining undefeated in its last three away games. In addition, Wednesday’s fixture against Atlanta United will be the second meeting between the sides this campaign and sixth in Club history. Inter Miami will be seeking its third victory against the Georgia based side. Last time both teams clashed was on May 9, with the match resulting in a 1-1 stalemate at DRV PNK Stadium.
Familiar Faces
The match may also feature reunions between former teammates or rivals for Inter Miami and Atlanta players. Notably, Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda faced Inter Miami’s Jay Chapman, Federico Higuaín and Victor Ulloa during his playing career. Pineda matched up against Higuaín in a Liga MX fixture in 2008 when Higuaín played for Club América and Pineda was a C.D. Guadalajara player, and in two MLS matches between 2014 and 2015 while Higuaín was part of the Columbus Crew and Pineda played for the Seattle Sounders. Chapman and Pineda, meanwhile, clashed in an MLS match in 2015, with Chapman’s Toronto FC taking on Pineda and the Sounders, while Ulloa played against Pineda and the Sounders four times between 2014 and 2015, including a playoffs game, during his stint with FC Dalas.
Additionally, Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro may have a head to head against two compatriots, Jürgen Damm and Érick Torres. Pizarro was teammates with Damm at C.F. Pachuca from 2013 to 2015 and has also featured alongside him with the Mexican National Team, while he has lined up alongside Torres at various levels of the national team. Pizarro has also matched up against both in the past, competing Damm in a Concacaf Champions League matches and against Torres in a Liga MX game during his time as a Pachuca player.
Defender / midfielder Christian Makoun, meanwhile, could also play against his Venezuelan counterpart Ronald Hernández, who he played alongside with Zamora FC and Venezuela’s U-20 National Team. Lewis Morgan could face Jake Mulraney after playing against each other in Scottish Premier League games during his stint with Celtic F.C. and against Anton Walkes after playing against him five times in EFL League One action while playing for Sunderland AFC. Julián Carranza may play against Alan Franco after previously facing each other in an Argentine top-flight match in 2019, where Carranza’s Banfield took on Franco’s Independiente.
Lastly, Leandro González Pirez and Brek Shea may play against their former side, while Atlanta’s Mikey Ambrose may face his former teammates after featuring as part of the Inter Miami roster for the team’s inaugural campaign in 2020.
In addition, Inter Miami defender Nicolás Figal and midfielder Gregore will miss the match as they are currently serving suspensions.
