Familiar Faces
The match may also feature reunions between former teammates or familiar rivals for Inter Miami and Atlanta players. Notably, Inter Miami’s Federico Higuaín and Jay Chapman faced Atlanta’s head coach Gonzalo Pineda during his playing career. Higuaín faced Pineda three times, once in 2008 in a Liga MX Clausura match during his stint with CF América and twice in MLS while he was with the Columbus Crew in 2014 and 2015. Chapman played against Pineda who was with the Seattle Sounders in 2015 during his tenure with Toronto FC.
Reunions may be in the cards for a handful of international players. Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro may have a head to head against two compatriots, Jürgen Damm and Érick Torres. Pizarro was teammates with Damm during his stint C.F. Pachuca from 2013 to 2015 and they have featured together for the Mexican National Team. Meanwhile Pizarro and Torres have also been teammates throughout various levels of the national team. On the other hand, the midfielder has also matched up against both in the past, competing against Torres in Liga MX action during his time as a Pachuca player and against Damm during his stints with Pachuca, Chivas and Monterrey. Forward Gonzalo Higuaín, meanwhile, may encounter Josef Martínez after playing against him six times between 2015 and 2016 in both Serie A and 2016 Copa América Centenario matches during his time with SSC Napoli, Juventus and with the Argentine National Team, facing Martínez while he played for Torino and with the Venezuelan national team.
Additionally, defender/midfielder Christian Makoun could play against his Venezuelan counterpart Ronald Hernández, who he played alongside with Zamora FC and Venezuela’s U-20 national team. Lewis Morgan could face Jake Mulraney after playing against each other in Scottish Premier League games during his stint with Celtic F.C. Morgan also has previously matched up against Anton Walkes, playing against him five times in EFL League One action while playing for Sunderland AFC. Indiana Vassilev may encounter Jackson Conway after featuring alongside him in two international friendlies with the United States U-16 Boys’ National Team. Forward Juliàn Carranza could face Alan Franco and Marcelino Moreno after playing against them in Argentine top-flight matches during his time with Club Atlético Banfield.
Lastly, Leandro González Pírez and Brek Shea may play against their former side, while Atlanta’s Mikey Ambrose may face his former teammates after featuring as part of the Inter Miami roster in the team’s inaugural campaign in 2020.
