MLS and Black Players for Change Commemorate Juneteenth with “Freedom to Be” Jersey Numbers and Jersey Auction
Major League Soccer announced a series of initiatives to celebrate Juneteenth – the historic date commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans in the U.S. All programs are a close collaboration between MLS, the league’s 28 clubs, and Black Players for Change (BPC) – an independent organization of Black MLS players, coaches, and staff working to bridge the racial equality gap in soccer and society– and are a continuation of MLS’ work to bring awareness to the significant contributions of Black Americans, and to foster more inclusive and equitable communities.
When MLS’ 28 clubs take to the field this weekend (June 18-19), all players will be wearing jerseys featuring Juneteenth-inspired numbers designed by Judah, a Black queer artist from Childersburg, Alabama. Judah, who now resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., created the numbers – a vibrant yellow, green, and red color palette, to represent the blood, soil and prosperity of Africa and its people.
Presented in commemorative boxes, the game-worn jerseys will be available for fans to acquire via an online auction from June 20 – July 5. Proceeds from the auction will benefit organizations supporting and uplifting Black communities in the markets of MLS clubs. Inter Miami CF will be benefiting the Mourning Family Foundation with the proceeds from the auction. Additional auction information, including how to place a bid, will be made available on MLSauctions.com later this week.
Unbeaten in the Last Four
Inter Miami will resume 2022 MLS regular season action after three weeks in search of extending its unbeaten run in MLS to five. Ahead of the international break, the team earned a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers at DRV PNK Stadium in its previous MLS 2022 regular season fixture on May 28, led by goals by striker Leonardo Campana and midfielder Robert Taylor. It was Campana’s eighth in all competitions this season, seventh in the 2022 MLS regular season, and and the second for Taylor, who earned MLS Team of the Week honors for week 14. With the win against Portland, Inter Miami extended its unbeaten streak at home across all competitions to six and its unbeaten run in MLS play to four.
