Inter Miami CF defeated the Seattle Sounders FC 0-1 on the road in the first-ever matchup between the sides to clinch the team’s second win in a row. Heineken Man of the Match Robbie Robinson scored the team’s goal off of DeAndre Yedlin’s and Leonardo Campana’s first assists with the team, while a collaborative team effort secured the club’s first away clean sheet against the Concacaf Champions League finalist.
Lineup Notes
Inter Miami lined up with the same starting XI it fielded a week ago in a win over the New England Revolution. Nick Marsman started in goal; Yedlin, Damion Lowe, Aimé Mabika and Chris McVey manned the team’s defense; captain Gregore, Jean Mota and Robert Taylor started as the midfield trio; Campana started as the team’s striker while flanked by Robinson and Ariel Lassiter on the wings.
The match marked a return to Seattle for both Yedlin and Lowe. Yedlin was the first Homegrown Player in Sounders history, starring for the team for two seasons to start his professional career. Lowe, meanwhile, was a 2014 MLS SuperDraft pick by the team.
Match Action
The match opened at an even pace with both sides probing for opportunities.
Inter Miami, however, opened the scoring through a Robinson goal in the 41st minute. Robinson started off the play by beating a defender and then handing off the ball to Campana, who turned and played a ball behind the defense to Yedlin. The right back then whipped in a pinpoint cross to Robinson in front of goal, who’s volleyed strike found the back of the net to hand Inter Miami a 0-1 lead. The goal was Robinson’s first of 2022 while the assist was Yedlin’s first for Inter Miami, and the secondary assist also marked Campana’s first.
The goal was enough for Inter Miami to go into the break in the lead, with the match 0-1 at halftime.
The hosts pushed in search of the equalizer throughout the entirety of the second half, but Inter Miami defended as a collective to block out Seattle’s approaches.
Inter Miami made three substitutions throughout the second 45 minutes; Bryce Duke, Noah Allen and Mo Adams came on in place of Taylor, Lassiter and Mota.
Thanks to the team’s defensive efforts, Inter Miami held the scoreline throughout the remainder of the fixture to win 0-1 and clinch its second consecutive win, following last week’s 3-2 victory over 2021 Supporters Shields champions New England Revolution, and first clean sheet on the road of the 2022 season.
Heineken Man of the Match
Goalscorer Robbie Robinson was voted the Heineken Man of the Match after netting the winner, his first goal of 2022.
Post-Match Reaction
“I think what you saw today was a continuation of the work; the work that’s required to become a good team, the work that’s required to have a clear identity. That’s two wins on the bounce now against the Eastern Conference champions and probably the best team in the Western Conference. So that should give us confidence, and that should give us massive learning and growth to keep believing in that growth of our identity,” said head coach Phil Neville.
