A shorthanded Inter Miami endured a 2-0 away loss against the New England Revolution on Saturday night. Following the result, head coach Phil Neville cautioned the team to not dwell on the defeat and instead, focus on returning to winning ways as quickly as possible.
“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves because we had one defeat; we just had a run of four wins on the bounce,” said Neville.
Neville pointed to the big week ahead for the squad and noted that there was no time to let this result linger.
“We’ve got to make sure we return to winning ways as quickly as possible. We have a big week next week; we’ve got Charlotte, we’ve got the U.S. Open Cup, and we’ve got D.C. United at home, and there’s no time at all to be moping around.”
Defender Christopher McVey reiterated that the team will put this game behind them when they return to training.
“Right now it doesn't feel good, but we have to put the game behind us and focus on the next game against Charlotte. We can't dwell on this. We need to learn and move on,” said McVey.
McVey also commended his teammates for the character shown against New England
“Everyone is fighting till the end even though we go down two men and everyone is working really hard, so the character of the team is there. Everyone is working and we know what we want.”
Neville is confident that the squad’s depth and determined mentality will be important assets in the upcoming matches.
“We’re going to have to ask players to do jobs that are slightly foreign to them, but jobs that we need them to do. This is what having a deep squad is all about. I thought the character the players showed under extreme adversity was outstanding, and we’ll need to show those types of qualities next week against Charlotte,” he concluded.
